Positive behaviour for children & teens

Positive behaviour is about acting, speaking and responding in ways that help with getting along with others, staying safe and developing well. Positive behaviour usually includes things like speaking kindly, cooperating, resolving conflict effectively, and following instructions.

Many things influence children’s ability to behave in positive ways. These include:

  • relationships
  • developmental stage
  • health and wellbeing.

Parents can do a lot to shape these influences and create an environment that helps children behave well. They can also use behaviour strategies when they need to. It’s worth putting time and thought into children’s behaviour. When children behave in positive ways, it’s good for their wellbeing, relationships with family and friends, confidence, learning, health and safety.
