The benefits of Lego!

As parents and grandparents, we all know the pain of Lego (especially when you step on it with bare feet)!  However, let’s look at some of the benefits!

1. Teamwork and Social Skills

One of the main aspects of Lego that children work collaboratively in a small group to create something together.

2. Communication and Language skills

To collaboratively build Lego a model, the children learn how to communicate with one another, expressing their thoughts, wants and needs and listening to others and their responses.

3. Problem solving, Mathematics and Spatial Awareness

The following of instructions, making sense of order, understanding quantity, symmetry, and patterns helps children to develop their mathematical skills and spatial awareness and encourages them in developing how to problem solve and come up with new ideas.

4. Creativity and Experimentation

Lego creations are a form of art, and children can become creators and story makers!

5. Physical Development

Playing with Lego is known to have amazing benefits for the development of fine motor skills, developing dexterity and strength in the fingers.

6. Perseverance and Management of Frustrations

Playing with Lego can be upsetting when the creations fall.  This can be very frustrating, however repeatedly playing with Lego can help children develop perseverance and learn to overcome frustration.

7. Self-Confidence

Building a Lego creation from instructions, or from an idea developed in their own mind gives children the opportunity of a successful outcome and sense of achievement.

8. Lowering Anxiety and Stress

Playing with Lego can have a calming and relaxing effect and can be helpful for children who may have anxiety or worries.

9. Patience

Lego building can be a test of children’s patience, especially when that right Lego piece takes forever to find. The building process can help children understand that perseverance, determination patience is needed to complete the task.

10. Focus and Concentration

Following instructions, planning, waiting for their turn and listening to others in a group situation takes focus and can be of huge benefit for children who sometimes need a little assistance with concentration.

So, when you see your children at work at Young Discoverers, just think about the amazing benefits and development opportunities that Lego provides!
