Building Resilience in OSHC

Supporting Children for Life

Building resilience is learning how to adapt, recover, and keep going when things feel challenging; and it is something that grows over time through everyday experiences.

At Young Discoverers OSHC, we see building resilience as one of the most important life skills we can help a child develop.

A place where children are capable and confident

Our OSHC environments are uniquely placed to support this growth. With a balance of structure and freedom, children have the opportunity to explore, make choices, and build independence outside the formal classroom setting.

We believe every child is capable and competent. Our educators intentionally build strong, trusting relationships so children feel safe to try new things. Whether it is attempting a new activity, navigating a tricky friendship moment, or persisting with a challenge, children are supported to have a go.

Rather than stepping in too quickly, our team encourages problem-solving, celebrates effort, and allows for manageable risks. This helps children develop confidence, persistence, and a strong sense of self-belief.

Learning through play and connection

Resilience is not built in isolation- it grows through connection with others. In our OSHC programs, children engage in play, teamwork, and shared experiences that naturally develop important social skills.

Through these interactions, children learn how to:

  • work together and cooperate
  • show empathy and understanding
  • manage disagreements respectfully
  • navigate challenges with others

Our educators gently guide these moments, helping children build the skills they need while maintaining a sense of belonging and safety.

Supporting emotional wellbeing

Understanding and managing emotions is a key part of resilience. In OSHC, we support children to recognise their feelings, express them appropriately, and develop strategies to regulate their responses.

Educators are attentive and responsive- stepping in when needed but also giving children space to learn and grow. This approach strengthens relationships and helps children feel understood, supported, and secure.

Growing resilience every day

Resilience does not happen all at once. It is built through consistent, everyday experiences- trying, learning, adjusting, and trying again.

At Young Discoverers OSHC, we create environments where children are supported to take safe risks, build independence, and develop meaningful connections. In doing so, we are helping them grow into confident, adaptable individuals who are well equipped for life.

Because when children feel supported, valued, and capable, they learn that they can face challenges- and keep going.
