Kindness begins in the early years

The early years are when children are learning how to be part of a community. They notice similarities and differences, test ideas, and learn how their actions affect others. When kindness is modelled and encouraged every day, children learn that caring for others is simply part of how we live and learn together.

How children learn to be kind

Children don’t learn kindness from big speeches – they learn it through everyday experiences…

• Relationships: feeling safe, valued and accepted
• Play: sharing, turn-taking and cooperating with friends
• Stories and conversations: exploring feelings, fairness and empathy
• Adult role-modelling: watching how educators respond with patience and respect

At Young Discoverers, our educators intentionally model gentle language, inclusive behaviour and thoughtful responses, helping children understand what kindness looks and feels like.

Kindness also means noticing when someone needs support. We guide children to…

• Invite others into play
• Use words to solve problems
• Stand alongside friends who feel unsure or left out

These small, everyday moments help children develop empathy, confidence and a strong sense of fairness.

Working together with families

Families are children’s first teachers, and we value working alongside parents, guardians and carers to reinforce messages of kindness and belonging. When children hear consistent messages at home and at their early learning service, those values grow deep roots.
